    About Bosch

75 years ago, in November 1927, Bosch was the first company world-wide to start series production of Diesel injection pumps and nozzles. For the first time, engine manufacturers were thus able to purchase an injection system that permitted economically viable production of high-speed Diesel engines. Bosch’s idea quickly turned into a success story. By now the company has manufactured more than 113 million Diesel injection systems — and the demand for Diesel-powered automobiles is increasing rapidly. In Western Europe the market share of Diesel passenger cars currently amounts to 40 percent. This contribution by Robert Bosch GmbH presents an overview of the milestones of development so far and offers an outlook into the future.

It’s been more than 40 years since Bosch invented the Oxygen Sensor and began series production in 1976. That same year, the Volvo 240/260-series became the first passenger car equipped with the new Bosch sensor. From there, production grew steadily and the Oxygen Sensor became an essential tool for fuel efficiency and the reduction of CO2 emissions. To date, Bosch has produced 1 billion Oxygen Sensors. It took 32 years – from 1976 to 2008 – to reach the production record of 500 million pieces, but only eight years – from 2008 to 2016 – to double the production figures to 1 billion sensors. Bosch Oxygen Sensors continue to lead the market with their high-quality reputation; an attribute that has defined Bosch since its inception.

Our objective is clear: ever-declining emissions so that diesel passenger cars contribute at most a negligible part of the nitrogen oxides in our cities’ ambient air. In recent years, Bosch has made steady progress toward this goal, and in 2018 managed to take yet another big step forward: after many kilometers of test drives on public roads, a mixed team of specialists once again achieved a significant improvement in the interplay of engine efficiency, exhaust-gas recirculation, and exhaust-gas treatment. In a series of drives that included a wide range of driving conditions and drivers, Bosch’s experimental test vehicle’s nitrogen-oxide emissions averaged 13 mg per kilometer. That is approximately only one-tenth of the maximum limit that will apply in Europe after 2020.
