What impact will a cam failure have on the engine?

Cam disc failure has many effects on the engine, from power performance to combustion process, and the overall stability of the engine. The following is a detailed explanation for you:

Valve timing disorder: One of the main functions of the cam disc is to accurately control the opening and closing time of the valve. When the cam disc fails, such as cam wear, deformation or breakage, the opening and closing time of the valve will be inaccurate. For example, if the intake valve opens early or closes late, part of the fresh mixture will flow back to the intake pipe, reducing the amount of mixture entering the cylinder and reducing the engine's charging efficiency. If the exhaust valve opens too early, the high-temperature and high-pressure gas that has not yet been completely burned will be discharged early, losing some energy; if it is closed too late, it will cause too much exhaust gas to remain, affecting the intake quality of the next cycle, all of which will greatly reduce the power output of the engine.

Abnormal valve lift: Under normal circumstances, the contour design of the cam disc determines the lift of the valve, that is, the maximum degree of valve opening. However, if the cam disc fails, such as the height of the cam is reduced due to wear, the valve lift will become smaller, resulting in insufficient intake, the mixture cannot fully enter the cylinder, the combustion is incomplete, and the engine power is reduced. On the contrary, if the cam disc causes the valve lift to be too large for some reason, the valve and the piston may collide, causing serious mechanical damage and making the engine unable to work normally.

Influence on the timing of fuel injection: In some engines, the cam disc not only controls the valve, but also has a certain relationship with the fuel injection system. For example, in the distribution pump system of some diesel engines, the cam disc drives the plunger to work to achieve fuel pressurization and distribution. If the cam disc fails and the plunger moves abnormally, the timing of fuel injection will be inaccurate and the amount of fuel injection will be unstable. Too much fuel injection will cause fuel waste, incomplete combustion, black smoke and other phenomena; too little fuel injection will make the engine underpowered. Improper fuel injection timing, such as injection too early or too late, will prevent the combustion process from taking place at the best time, which will also reduce the performance of the engine and increase fuel consumption.

Unstable engine operation: The cam disc failure causes valve timing disorder, abnormal valve lift and fuel injection problems, which will cause the working state of each cylinder of the engine to be inconsistent. Some cylinders have sufficient air intake and normal combustion, while others have insufficient air intake and poor combustion, which will cause the engine to have serious vibration, unstable operation and increased noise. If it is in this unstable working state for a long time, it will also accelerate the wear of other engine parts and shorten the service life of the engine.
