Auto Expo was conceived in 1985 and made its debut in 1986 at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. It was a pioneering event and a window for technology transfer as it showcased how the Indian automotive industry absorbed new technologies and promoted indigenous R&D to adapt these technologies to the harsh conditions in India. Over the years, the show has grown and by 2006 it began to welcome new car launches, concept cars, trade dialogues and a large number of overseas exhibitors.
In 2008, it received accreditation from the Organization of International Automobile Manufacturers (OICA), cementing its reputation as one of the world’s top auto shows. Today, the Auto Expo is eagerly awaited by traders and enthusiasts alike, as it offers opportunities for growth and a glimpse into the future.

The Indian automobile market is growing in size and gaining importance in the global automobile market with each passing day.2022 saw record passenger car sales in India.15 manufacturers, with cumulative sales of 3,768,412 units, up 24% year-on-year. Together with the 35,000 units sold by luxury car makers, cumulative sales for the entire Indian market exceeded 3.8 million units. This is an increase of more than 10% over the annual sales of 3.34 million units in 2018 before the epidemic. The sales indicate that the Indian automobile market has not only recovered, but has improved further. Some automakers also recorded their best ever annual sales. -India’s Electric Vehicles (EVs) saw phenomenal growth of 223% in 2022 with sales of 48,000 units. Experts say that India’s electric vehicle (EV) sales are expected to surpass 2 million units in FY2024, with electric two- and three-wheelers seen as the main driver of sales growth, including new car launches, popularity of charging stations, and lower maintenance costs, all of which are incentives to lure consumers and EV fleets to buy electric two- and three-wheelers.
