Market Analysis
Russia has become the largest destination for China’s automobile exports and the world’s largest importer of Chinese complete vehicles. In the first half of 2023, China’s exports of complete vehicles to Russia increased by 543% over the same period in 2022, reaching US$4.6 billion. According to estimates by the Russian Customs Service, nearly 70% of Russia’s imported cars came from China in the first half of 2023, compared with 10% in 2021. According to data from Autostat, a Russian automobile market analysis agency, in the first five months of 2023, China supplied a total of 120,900 sedans to Russia, accounting for 70.5% of the total number of cars exported to Russia during the same period. This figure increased by 86.7% over the same period last year, setting a record high. With the continuous deepening of economic and trade relations between China and Russia, the convenience and potential of China’s automobile exports to Russia will also be further enhanced. Auto parts: China’s supply of auto parts to Russia has also increased, reaching US$179.2 million (+11%). Today, due to the withdrawal from the European market, China’s auto parts have greatly made up for the shortage of body parts in the Russian market. In this category, China’s auto parts share has reached 45%. The demand for Chinese parts in the field of auto body parts in Russia is high. When buying new parts, 58% of consumers choose products from China.
◇ Russia further promotes stimulus policies to help the automotive industry survive the economic recession
Under the influence of the complex international economic and political situation, Western companies such as Europe and the United States have withdrawn from Russia, resulting in a large gap in the supply side of the Russian import market. In the auto parts market, the original inventory is rapidly depleted, and new suppliers are urgently needed to replenish the inventory. This is exactly the market share that Chinese companies can seize, and there is huge room. According to data from the Ministry of Commerce of China, China has been Russia’s largest trading partner for 12 consecutive years. In 2021, the bilateral trade volume between the two countries exceeded US$147 billion, a year-on-year increase of 35.9%. About two-thirds of Russia’s auto parts are imported, and automobiles and auto parts have become one of Russia’s main imports from China, and they are growing rapidly. As of mid-2023, Russia has 85.98 million Chinese-branded cars, accounting for 1.8% of the total registered passenger cars. In the first two months of 2023 alone, Russians have spent a total of 41.3 billion rubles (about 5 billion yuan) on Chinese auto brands, accounting for 9.7% of the total spending on new passenger cars, doubling their market share over the same period last year. The still growing number of cars in the country also provides strong impetus and space for the development of Chinese companies in the automotive aftermarket. By participating in the exhibition, Chinese companies can further promote trade cooperation and technical exchanges, and gradually gain a foothold in the Russian and CIS markets.
◇ Major auto brands invest heavily and are optimistic about the development prospects of the auto market
The Russian auto market sales list shows that twelve Chinese self-owned brands have been listed. Next year, other self-owned automakers will enter the Russian auto market. Russia will once again become a hot auto market for self-owned brands. With so many complete vehicle companies entering Russia, it is inevitable that supporting spare parts companies will follow suit. Chinese spare parts companies can not only provide supporting services to independent auto companies in Russia, but also vigorously develop cooperation with local Russian auto companies. Volga, Russia’s largest light vehicle manufacturer (producing Lada brand cars), intends to conduct in-depth cooperation with my country’s spare parts industry. Volga will open its spare parts supply to Chinese spare parts suppliers and comprehensively recruit investors, including electronic and electrical, gearboxes, suspension components, engine components, aluminum alloy wheels, seats and bearings and other auto parts.
